PréVÉO: Prevention of Ordinary Educational Violence
Ordinary Educational Violence (VEO) is still widely used despite its legal prohibition since 2019. These practices raise crucial questions about children's rights and the quality of family relations. A recent survey indicates that more than 80% of parents in France continue to use VEOs, highlighting the need for targeted intervention and increased awareness.
The PréVÉO project, led by Olivia Paul, aims to identify the mechanisms that encourage parents’ use of Ordinary Educational Violence (OEV), as well as to design and evaluate tailored prevention programs. The project also examines the representations and needs of health and education professionals regarding parenting support.
PréVÉO raises the critical issue of violent practices that remain used, accepted, and tolerated in the context of childrearing, despite their legal prohibition and the extensive body of research documenting their harmful effects on children’s development.
To this end, the project will combine a parental survey with the experimental evaluation of three awareness-raising programs, as well as focus groups with professionals.
PréVÉO adopts an intervention-oriented approach with parents to reduce the use of ordinary educational violence by promoting positive parenting practices. In doing so, it seeks to generate an indirect yet significant impact on children’s well-being, while also strengthening the role of professionals in supporting parents. In the long term, PréVÉO aspires to transform practices at the collective level and contribute to lasting societal change, in line with both the law and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.
