Chair holder of the AXA - IHES Chair in Mathematics, Maxim Kontsevich is one the five winners of the inaugural Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics, « for work making a deep impact in a vast variety of mathematical disciplines, including algebraic geometry, deformation theory, symplectic topology, homological algebra and dynamical systems ».

The richness of Maxim Kontsevich's work has been recognized internationally in many different ways -already a winner of the inaugural Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics in 2012, he has received several of the world's most prestigious mathematics awards including the Henri Poincaré Prize from the International Association of Mathematical Physics and, the Fields medal.

Launched by Mark Zuckerberg and Yuri Milner in December 2013, the Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics aims to recognize major advances in the field, honor the world's best mathematicians, support their future endeavors and communicate the excitement of mathematics to general public.
