Training and Awareness Program on Cybersecurity for the Youth

Nigeria is grappling with a rising wave of cybercrime, ranking third globally and losing approximately 127 billion Naira annually to online fraud (CSEAN, 2017). Young people, as the most active internet users, are particularly impacted—both as victims and perpetrators. In Rivers State, a key oil-producing region in the Niger Delta, this issue has undermined trust in the digital economy, making immediate action essential.

As part of an AXA Outreach project, Dr. Vivian Ugwuja, former AXA Postdoctoral Fellow from University of Port Harcourt is spearheading an outreach project to tackle this challenge. The initiative will train 2,000 students—1,000 from public secondary schools and 1,000 from tertiary institutions—on cybersecurity awareness, online safety, and ethical digital behavior. By addressing the root causes of cybercrime and equipping young people with essential skills, this program aims to create a lasting impact in Rivers State and beyond.

In collaboration with the Nigerian Communications Commission, banks, and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the program will host interactive workshops in five secondary schools and five tertiary institutions across Rivers State. The objectives of the project include:

·       Teaching students practical skills to safeguard themselves online.

·       Reducing youth involvement in cybercrime by fostering ethical online practices.

·       Rebuilding trust in the digital economy through widespread cybersecurity awareness.

The outreach project “Say No to Cybercrime”, has left a profound impact on the society by training 2000 youths, educating participants on the legal and financial consequences of cybercrime and equipping them with skills for safe and responsible internet use. Many attendees shared how the training transformed their perspectives on cybercrime.

This initiative is not just about education—it’s about empowering the next generation to use the digital space responsibly and productively.  With the AXA Research Fund’s support, this initiative lays the foundation for lasting change, empowering individuals, and fostering a brighter, more secure future.
