OMIN X: Intervention to Optimize Parenting Practices for Sleep to Reduce Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy (SUDI)

Sudden unexpected death in infancy (SUDI) is defined as the sudden and unexplained death of an infant under one year of age when there was nothing in its known history to suggest it and the cause of which is not obvious before investigation. This tragedy affects thousands of families every year. In France, SUDI’s death rate is one of the highest in Europe with about 300 deaths per year, despite prevention campaigns. Parents' implementation of safe sleeping recommendations is suboptimal. In 2021, 20% of 2-month-old infants not lying exclusively on their back (ENP 2021).

The OMIN X project led by Fabien Fenouillet aims to reduce these deaths through an innovative approach involving digital educational tools. Over 24 months, he will develop an information system, a learning tool and evaluates their impact on parenting practices.

This project compares the effectiveness of different smartphone-based educational devices in the prevention of SUDI. This study took place with 1st year psychology students, with a view to developing the project at a national level. Six educational devices have been developed in this context: three online videos including an ambassador, two serious games and a text device containing the recommendations of the pediatric health record.

The ultimate objective is to reduce the incidence of sudden unexpected death in infancy by optimizing the implementation by parents of safe sleeping recommendations, particularly among socially disadvantaged populations.
