Macu-Life : Lifestyle Exposome and risk of Age-related Macular Degeneration
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual loss in France and industrialized countries. After the age of 80, about 1 in 5 people have AMD. Treatments are limited and do not prevent visual loss.
The "Macu-Life" project led by Bénédicte Merle is a study aimed at better understanding the role of lifestyle in the development of AMD. By analysing the impact of lifelong exposures to individual patterns (diet, tobacco, physical activity, metabolic and vascular factors), this project aims to identify new prevention levers. It is based on the unique data of the E3N cohort: 100,000 women followed since 1990, 2,000 cases of AMD.
This project will help detect at-risk populations in order to implement targeted actions before the outbreak of the disease. In a context of increasing ageing and in the absence of a cure, Macu-Life aims to help promote healthy eye ageing and to limit the personal, social and economic consequences of AMD.
