Healthy Aging Intervention Study : ICOPE TRIAL.Fr
Public health and medicine are facing an unprecedented increase in the number of older people whose medical needs are not fully met. Currently, medicine focuses on the treatment of proven diseases and prevention efforts are often limited to screening and vaccination of a very limited number of diseases. Thus, life expectancy has increased to 80 years on average in Europe, but healthy life expectancy is limited to around 67 years.
The ICOPE Trial.Fr led by Bruno Vellas evaluates the interest of the ICOPE program developed by the WHO, which is a prevention program focused on the functions of mobility, cognition, nutrition, vision, hearing and mental health. WHO has designed ICOPE to maintain self-reliance in 5 steps: screening, assessment, personalized care plan, follow-up and community involvement. Screening, carried out by a professional or an application, targets 6 key functions. In the event of a deficit, an alert validated by a nurse triggers an assessment and appropriate care.
The trial will validate that the full implementation of ICOPE is necessary for an effective prevention of age-related functional decline and could be a major step forward in an ageing society.
Beyond the evidence it will generate, this program aims to transform care practices for older adults by focusing on maintaining long-term autonomy by tracking the functions and not the diseases of aging people. For individuals, it allows for regular self-monitoring and engagement in personalized prevention plans for healthy aging.
