Protecting Artworks from Light: A New Investigative Tool
The PhD project aimed to enhance the model for assessing the risk of light exposure on Van Gogh's works, specifically by deepening our understanding of the light fading behavior of these pieces. The innovative aspect of the research lay in the development of an improved micro-fading device, which enabled the team to conduct light sensitivity analyses of colored surfaces. This advancement holds the potential to provide valuable insights into the preservation of Van Gogh's artworks and contribute to the broader field of art conservation.
At this stage, it may be premature to fully assess the impact of the research on the broader field. The first year was dedicated to the development of the micro-fading device and an in-depth study of color change phenomena through extensive literature review. Following the testing and assessment of the device's developments, Gauthier Patin has been able to share his findings with the research community through articles, conference presentations, and networking activities, thereby contributing to the advancement of knowledge in the field of art conservation and light exposure risk assessment.
