With approximately 307,000 premature deaths in 2019 linked to chronic exposure to fine particulate matter*, air pollution remains a critical health issue in Europe. Despite progress made with the European Air Quality Directive published on 20th Nov. 2024, urban and industrial areas continue to face significant challenges to monitor and improve air quality.

The EU’s Horizon 2020 funded program RI-URBANS, co-led by CSIC and University of Helsinki, aims to addressing these challenges by providing research infrastructure services. Running from October 2021 to September 2025, the project has developed 16 advanced service tools to enhance air quality monitoring, assess health impacts, and create innovative emission inventories and models.

Building on its previous support for air pollution research by project team member Fulvio Amato, the AXA Research Fund is honored to support RI-URBANS efforts to promote the implementation of science-based air quality policies across Europe.

As RI-URBANS reaches its final stage, we invite you to join their Final Stakeholder Webinar on 10th September 2025 to learn about the project’s outcomes and future implications.

Registration to the event is available here, till September 5th, 2025: FINAL RI-URBANS' stakeholder Webinar: Registration Form.
