CHRONOS-SARC : Preventing loss of autonomy in older patients by improving the diagnosis of sarcopenia and muscle monitoring with innovative high-definition surface electromyography technology

Sarcopenia is a serious muscle-related condition because it is associated with a loss of autonomy, an increased risk of falls, and higher mortality rates among older people. It is common among the older people and carries significant medico-economic costs.

In France, nearly 3 million people aged 70+ are hospitalised at least once a year, and 1.6 million people aged 80+ are hospitalised each year. Furthermore, up to 23% of older adults admitted to geriatric wards are sarcopenic (EWGSOP2 definition; Bertschi, 2021).

Led by Kiyoka Kinugawa-Bourron, the CHRONOS-SARC project aims to improve the diagnosis of sarcopenia in the older patients and promote the maintenance of their autonomy.

The research team intends to develop a new diagnostic tool for sarcopenia that will assess the quantitative and qualitative aspects of muscle (a 2-in-1 tool). This tool will use high-definition surface electromyography technology in collaboration with Sorbonne University, AP-HP and the University of Technology of Compiègne.

Developing new approaches to non-invasively evaluating sarcopenia is a major challenge that will allow for easier and earlier diagnosis, ultimately helping to combat loss of autonomy.
