Masterclass on the Nexus of Migration, Human Rights and Climate Change

The Masterclass on Globalising the Nexus of Migration, Human Rights, and Climate Change is a pioneering initiative designed to deepen understanding and foster dialogue on the critical issue of Climate Mobility (CM).  While those directly impacted by CM or working in related fields are aware of its significance, there is a pressing need for broader, informed discussions on the realities, policy gaps, and systemic challenges surrounding this global phenomenon.

As part of an AXA Outreach Initiative under the leadership of Dr. Cosmin Corendea from O.P. Jindal Global Univeristy, this Masterclass aims to address these gaps by creating a structured platform for knowledge-sharing and youth engagement. It builds on the groundbreaking 2017 report, Migration, Human Rights and Climate Change, authored by Mr. Corendea under the auspices of UNU and AXA. The report, which focuses on the Pacific Islands—mainly Fiji and Vanuatu— serves as a key resource for understanding the intersection of migration, human rights, and climate change. The Masterclass extends these insights to a global scale, beginning with an Asian perspective.

Youth engagement is central to this initiative, as young people are key drivers of policy change and political action. By involving youth in cross-border discussions about the challenges faced by vulnerable communities and exploring actionable solutions, the Masterclass aims to inspire a new generation of leaders to address Climate Mobility with urgency and innovation.

The Masterclass, held on November 2nd, 2022 both online and in person at O.P. Jindal Global University, featured Mr. Corendea and Mr. M.C. Mehta — one of India’s most renowned environmentalists with over 25,000 court decisions and landmark cases, including those related to the Taj Mahal, Bhopal, and the Ganga River—as speakers. This event offered unparalleled insights into environmental jurisprudence and serves as a valuable resource for courses in Indian academic institutions and universities worldwide.

By initiating these critical conversations in India and beyond, the Masterclass sought to catalyze meaningful action and contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future for communities affected by the nexus of migration, human rights, and climate change.
