Climate Change Impact on Coasts

Coastal zones around the world are on the frontlines of climate change, facing unprecedented challenges from rising sea levels, shifting wave conditions, intensifying storm surges, and altered river flows. These changes threaten not only the physical landscape but also the livelihoods, infrastructure, and safety of millions of people.

Recognizing the urgent need for action, AXA Chair in Climate Change Impacts and Coastal Risks, Professor Roshanka Ranasinghe, led a groundbreaking outreach project at IHE Delft to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and public awareness. To prepare highly vulnerable and low-adaptive-capacity countries for climate change impacts on their coastlines, raising awareness among frontline professionals, the general public, and younger generations is essential. The project therefore aimed to empower those coastal communities by equipping them with accessible, actionable information about the risks they face and the strategies they can adopt to adapt.

The project delivered two key resources designed to make complex scientific insights understandable and actionable for a broad audience.

-          The first was a visually engaging booklet that used a combination of illustrations and graphics to showcase the diverse impacts of climate change on coastlines.

-          The second resource was an interactive online PowerPoint presentation that delved deeper into the scientific drivers of coastal impacts and provided a methodological framework for developing effective adaptation strategies.

Together, these tools served as a vital first step in raising awareness and fostering resilience in some of the world’s most at-risk regions.

Supported by the AXA Research Fund, this outreach project was a collaborative effort involving Professor Ranasinghe and his team, including Trang Duong and Ali Dastgheib. By translating cutting-edge research into practical, user-friendly formats, the project not only increased awareness of climate change impacts on coasts but also laid the groundwork for informed, on-the-ground adaptation measures. This effort has made a lasting contribution to empowering communities to face the challenges of a changing climate with knowledge and preparedness.
