Regional Climate Change Conference on Climate Science, Adaptation & Financing
The AXA Research Fund will support the Regional Climate Change Conference (RCCC), an innovative annual event, which will take place between October 13th – 15th 2025, in Sri Lanka designed to address the critical and localized challenges of climate change, with a particular focus on the Global South. This includes regions such as Asia, Africa, the Pacific and Caribbean Islands, South America, and the Middle East, which are often disproportionately affected by climate impacts. The theme of the conference will be “The Intersection of Climate Science, Adaptation, and Climate Financing : Focus on the Global South and Inclusivity”.
RCCC, convened by Dr. Roshanka Ranasinghe, AXA Chair in Climate Change Impacts and Coastal Risks at IHE Delft Foundation, is the first global conference dedicated exclusively to regional climate change. It aims to fill a significant gap in the international climate discourse by providing a platform to exchange scientific knowledge, practical experiences, policy advancements across nations and communities, with a particular emphasis on early career researchers and women, especially from the Global South. RCCC further seeks to share the latest developments on climate hazards, risks, adaptation strategies, and financing solutions, all tailored to regional contexts.
RCCC is expected to host approximately 100 participants from around the world, including leading researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders. The event will feature keynote and plenary speakers, with strong involvement from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Global climate financing organizations such as the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, GEF, and UNDP, as well as major insurance players like Munich Re, Allianz, and AXA, will also be invited to participate. This engagement is expected to foster collaboration, open doors to innovative projects, and catalyze investments in climate resilience.
By focusing on the unique challenges and opportunities at the regional level, RCCC aims to advance future research using cutting-edge methods in climate modeling, regional impacts, and risk assessment, with bi-annual conferences rotating between Sri Lanka and Thailand.
