Assessing the risk of mortality in cases of near-miss maternal morbidity
Death during pregnancy and childbirth, although rare in modern countries, still exists. Dr. Gilles Kayem is investigating maternal near-miss events, in which the mother comes close to death but does not die. They can leave women heavily handicapped for the rest of their lives. Kayem’s scrutiny of near-misses may give insight on how to avoid the rare, yet dramatic event of a healthy woman’s death during childbirth, which will be beneficial for obstetric practitioners and health-care units.
