Mittag-Leffler Fellowship Project

Calm, silent and peaceful: time seems to stop for three to eight months and there is nothing but complex mathematical concepts.
A meeting place for internationally-renowned mathematicians and junior participants around one special subject, chosen within the mathematical sciences – pure or applied.
That’s what happens at the Mittag-Leffler Institute, a research center unlike any other in Djursholm, a suburb of Stockholm. Internationally known as the oldest mathematics research institute in the world, it operates under the auspices of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences but enjoys great autonomy.

Founded in 1916, the Mittag-Leffler Institute has organized thematic research programs since 1968. Its mission is to support international top-level research in mathematics. Scientific programs are created to give mathematicians the opportunity to spend a period of time at the Institute doing research under optimal circumstances, in the company of and in collaboration with internationally renowned scientists in their respective fields.

The current program at the Institute is devoted to Geometric and Analytic Aspects of Group Theory. Group Theory, in its various forms, plays an important role in several areas of modern mathematics, also extending into other sciences such as theoretical physics. Group Theory is thus a natural meeting point for geometry, topology, analysis, dynamics, number theory, combinatorics, probability theory, and so on. The program reflects this diversity of connections. In addition to weekly seminars with lectures by the participants, it is essential for successful research in mathematics to have ample time for concentration and undisturbed work.
For this reason visits for less than one month are generally not allowed, making the Institute different from other mathematical research institutes in Europe and North America.
