Characterization of novel genetic regulatory elements controlling diatom response to stress in marine environment

My research focuses on understanding how marine photosynthetic organisms have developed strategies to adapt to the environmental changes. Between marine photosynthetic organisms, diatoms are a major but poorly understood phytoplankton group. Diatoms are unicellular photosynthetic eukaryotes that contribute close to one quarter of global primary productivity. Their ecological success might reflect their abilities for perceiving and responding to environmental changes. The aim of my research is to start to understand how these organisms respond to relevant environmental stress. Molecular mechanisms controlling these responses are still completely unknown.
